Bridford v Newton Poppleford Cricket Club NPCC on Sun 22 Jun 2008 at
Newton Poppleford Cricket Club Won By 73 Runs

Match report With a youthful looking side, Newton travelled to Bridford for this return fixture. With Captain Clay including his son Thomas for his Sunday debut and two seventeen year olds also selected the average age must have dipped below forty for the first time in a while.
Newton were inserted and after the last outing went “quackers” with the first three batsmen the first of five ducks, it was with some surprise when opener Last pulled his first scoring shot for four. Fellow opener Coombs also flicked one to the boundary before he attempted the same stroke next ball and was adjudged LBW despite an audible edge. Stott continued to find the short boundaries before he was the second of what turned out to be four LBW`s for the day. Cardwell and Last kept the score racing along with more boundaries than singles but when the former departed a partnership was what was needed. Last played foil to allow the Skipper the strike and Clay duly took full advantage. Placing fielders in the deep is to no avail when the ball sails six foot over your head, and it was Bridford who were on the ropes.
When Last was bowled attempting another pull, Clay, who had asked for a quick teeth count after top edging one, was soon to follow, LBW for a powerful 42. With the pressure off the scene was set for Alex Raistrick and James Burton to reap the rewards and they went about their task with gusto. Raistrick was forced to play second fiddle as Burton lashed the bowlers to all corners reaching his maiden club fifty off only twelve scoring shots. When Raistrick departed for 21, Burton soon followed, bowled for a swashbuckling 67. Thomas Clay showed no fear or respect to finish 7 not out and Mathew Raistrick eventually got off the mark in the last over to take Newton to 209 for 7, with not a duck in sight.
Bridford`s reply suffered early set backs when Newton`s opening bolwers Needs and Mathew Rastrick struck quickly, two easy catches for Coombs and a smarter one for Burton left Bridford reeling but Joy, batting at three looked comfortable. Scoring heavily down the leg side he was joined by McMurdo and Bridford looked quietly capable of causing an upset. When Joy strolled past his fifty and the hundred partnership came up, Newton were looking for one good ball to break them up. Stone duly obliged, getting one to seam back in and Joy departed for a gutsy 82. Bridford`s tail-enders then fell away to leave them all out for 144.
