Trophy returns to The Cannon Inn

Tipton St John v Newton Poppleford – match sponsored by The Golden Lion

Tipton welcomed neighbours Newton Poppleford who brought with them the trophy that seems to live permanently in The Cannon Inn. David Birch won the toss yet again and decided to bat.

Tipton started well, with Steve Walker and Jem Gillham putting on 41 for the first wicket before Gillham was caught by Alex Raistrick off Ben Stone for 13 in the 12th over. Adam Gibbins did not have a good day and should have followed his instincts and stayed in bed. He plopped a simple catch to Ben Lee fielding on the covers off Ed Tomas 4th ball for a duck.

Ollie Coates joined Walker and the pair looked as though they could put together a good partnership as Walker struck 5 fours and a six. He had a let off when dropped at short leg but did not profit from this as, without adding to his score, he nicked a ball off Isaac Thomas to Kenny Clay behind the stumps for 31 off 44 balls.

Steve Shaw managed 13 before being comprehensively bowled middle stumps (photo!) by Alex Raistrick and was followed next ball by the unfortunate Chris Mason who played on.

Dicky Dawson avoided the hat-trick but soon lost partner Ollie Coates who became Kenny Clay’s 2nd victim behind the stumps off Isaac Thomas. Coates made 26 off 33 balls and ‘walked’ as soon as he was caught. He did then turn to seek the umpire’s opinion, but as he had already taken a couple of paces towards the pavilion, I think the umpire was always going to agree with him!

With the score on 96-6 a challenging target was now unlikely. Once David Birch was bowled by Isaac Thomas for 9 the bunnies were quivering in their hutch and only added 4 more runs. Phil Wright defended well for 11 balls but failed to curb his attacking instincts when presented with a short ball by Leigh Adey and paddled it to Richard Coombs at short square leg for 2. Dicky Dawson was bowled by Alex Raistrick. Tom Whittington was unable to get the opportunity to get his first Tipton runs as David O’Higgins was bowled by Alex Raistrick for a 3 ball duck.

So Tipton meekly closed their innings on 119 in the 35th over. Taking the bowling honours were Alex Raistrick with 4-9 and Isaac Thomas with 3-28.

Many thanks for the first rate tea supplied by match sponsors The Golden Lion.

Newton Poppleford opened with Seb Lee and Paul Newberry. With such a small total to defend, Tipton needed to take early wickets. Great opening spells by Ollie Coates and Steve Shaw kept the runs in check. Coates first 6 overs went for just 5 runs and Shaw’s first 7 conceded 14. Shaw had an interesting battle with Paul Newberry who, on several occasions, drove balls back at the bowler with some speed. With the score on 7, Newberry offered a difficult caught & bowled chance which Shaw could not grasp. Encouraged by his fortune, Newberry had another go in Shaw’s next over with exactly the same result, dropped catch, 4 runs saved and a very hot hand!

With the score on 16, Shaw made the breakthrough thanks to a great catch by Steve Walker, Seb Lee being the victim for 3 off 30 balls. Paul Newberry followed one run later LBW to Shaw for 11. Richard Coombs became Shaw’s 3rd victim, bowled for a duck, so with the score on 17-3 Tipton were back in the match. Well, twice was unfortunate, but I think it was Tom Clay who spotted Steve Shaw’s weak point and drove a ball even harder than those offered by Mr Newberry back at poor Steve. As a result of which he has reported on facebook that he has fractured his middle finger! At least he prevented any runs.

David O’Higgins replaced Ollie Coates hoping to emulate his six wicket haul of the previous day. Instead, Tom Clay deposited him over the boundary for a six in his first over. He had revenge in his 2nd over but thanks are entirely due to Ollie Coates who took the catch of the season – and there are some good ones to choose from – running about 20 + yards in the deep and snatching the ball out of the air.

It was probably the partnership between Kenny Clay and Isaac Thomas that swung the match the Popples way. Both made 32, Clay with the more patient innings lasting 57 balls. His stay at the wicket was ended by a Dicky Dawson stumping off David Birch. Alex Raistrick was bowled by an extra slow ball in Phil Wright’s first over for a duck leaving the door open for a Tipton revival with the score on 74-6?

Not so as Thomas continue to accumulate runs aided by Leigh Adey. Deadly Phil Wright was only given 2 overs with skipper Birch trying other options :-(

Tipton did not help their cause by dropping at least 3 catches towards the end of the innings. Leigh Adey was dropped by the suffering Adam Gibbins off David Birch’s bowling and then Tom Whittington spilt a catch off Gibbins next over. Adam could not find his range and a no-ball was clobbered for a 6!

Tom Whittington suffered from the dropsy’s as Adam returned the compliment when he dropped another chance off Tom’s one and only over which ended with Matt Raistrick hitting a 6 to win the match.

So Newton Poppleford reached 120-7 with 4 overs to spare, ensuring the trophy made its way back to The Cannon for another year. Tipton’s bowling honours went to Steve Shaw 3-16. Ollie Coates 1-9 and David Birch 1-15, all off 8 overs.
