Match report Newton Poppleford are heading towards the latter stages of a cricket year in which we have enjoyed unparalleled success. The home ground has become a fortress and we are currently maintaining an 80%-win record. 2017 has also seen us smash our winning streak record, which now stands at 11. There is, however, still time for it to be beaten again.

This Sunday saw us take the not so long trek over to Woodbury, on what was sure to be a rain affected day. The rain came and went intermittently before play, only reducing the game to 35 overs a side. Having won the toss, skipper Kenny Clay elected to bat. This may have been considered a questionable decision by most given the weather conditions, but with four of the so-called ‘power-5’ playing, who could blame him?

The formidable opening pair of Isaac Thomas and Antony Cox took to the crease on a soggy wicket. They started strongly with Isaac hitting three fours in the first over. However, things started to slow up as the bowlers began to bowl in good areas. Isaac fell for 26 with the score only at 36 off the first 10. Sadly, the next two members of the ‘power-5’ did not trouble the scorers too much, with Chris Anning falling for 3 and Thomas Moore for 15 (after hitting a few lovely boundaries). With the score at 77 for 4, Newton Pop seemed to be in a spot of bother. However, a partnership of 57 between opener Antony Cox and vice-captain Richard Coombs would provide stability for a time. They played watchfully against some good bowling, rotating the strike well and finding the boundary off the deliveries which deserved it. Antony raised his bat for his 13th Newton Pop 50, but fell shortly afterwards for a crucial 61. The question in the pavilion was if we had played a Sunday game this year where there wasn’t a 50 or 100 from a Newton Pop player. Unfortunately, it was eventually realised that we had in every game bar one. Opener Isaac Thomas had hauled out on 49 in a game where we lost by two runs. Back to the game this weekend, which saw the next three batsman come and go without too much effect on the score. Richard Coombs would depart not long after for a very good 30 which included far too much running for his liking. The match winning partnership potentially came between our number 8 bat Chris Davis, and resident number 11 Andrew Marsh. Although they only had four balls together, they added a vital 12 runs to the score. Marsh dismissed Woodbury’s star bowler over cover for 1 run, much to the delight of the rest of the team. Davis was at the helm for the last two balls, smashing the first over cover for four and then dismissing the last over midwicket for another boundary, turning around immediately for the pavilion, knowing full well it would make it past the rope.

Having posted a reasonable 177 off their 35 overs, Newton Pop seemed pretty content when heading out to field. Opening bowlers Andrea Marsh and Phil Hunter bowled in good areas for the most part, finding some movement in the air early on. Marsh would be wicketless, going for 25 off his 7 overs, whilst Phil Hunter (1 for 17 off 7) would bag a wicket thanks to a good catch from Matthew Raistrick. Chris Davis remained surprisingly wicketless given his good bowling form this year, and was just a bit short of a good length during his spell. On a wicket that had been rained on for a good majority of the past few days, anything back of a length would be costly. Leading wicket taker Luke Raistrick bowled from the other end. Despite a certain degree of inconsistently, Luke found some good areas and picked up the one wicket during his 7 over spell. In the meantime, Woodbury had been going strongly, keeping up with the run rate thanks to a good 50 from their opening bat. However, the tides would change with the final bowling pair. Firstly, Chris Anning came on, bowling a great line and length to both batsman, and picking up a critical LBW in his first over. At the other end, Antony Cox came on to bowl, having to try and keep the opening bat at bay. He did this perfectly by removing the opener in the second last over for 80, with Woodbury needing 15 to win off 10 balls. Chris Anning would bowl the last, with Woodbury needing reachable target of 10 runs. Chris bowled a fantastic last over, conceding just three runs, and seeing Newton Pop home to their 17th win of the 2017 season.
