Newton Poppleford Cricket Club NPCC v Plymtree on Sun 11 May 2008 at
Newton Poppleford Cricket Club Lost By 7 Wickets
Match report
Someone once said to me, when you are in a rut, it`s better to go all the way to the bottom before you can come up again. This appears to be the way Newton are thinking at the moment.
Captain Clay elected to bat on a glorious day, quietly confident that lightening doesn`t strike twice and that last weeks sorry performance was all but forgotten. But when Newton have a bad day, they really have a bad day.
Coombs as is the norm, was first to go, playing a nothing shot to a straight ball, he misjudged the line to bag another LBW. He was swiftly followed by Clay who, after starting with a boundary lofted a powerful shot to mid-off with “catch me” written all over it. Opener Last, who had looked comfortable against the medium pace attack, chopped one to the keeper and instinctively walked. Stott and Cardwell started to push on until Stott was again the victim of a smart catch, this time at first slip.
At 28 for 4 a period of stability was needed and the runs column remained the same for the next five overs but unfortunately the wickets column didn`t. First Cardwell and then Goldthorpe departed before Mathew Raistrick arrived. Ably supported by Alsford his attacking style caused the Plymtree fielders to break in to a sweat for the first time until one shot too many got him caught out to top score with eleven. Alsford and Stone quickly followed so that all that was left was a cameo appearance by club chairman Jeffery who, after electing to bat at 11 played some excellent shots for his one run. At 53 all out, it was not far off our all-time lowest score.
With nothing to bowl at, it was a dejected Newton who took to the field. However both Raistrick and Thomas bowled with great consistency, the former taking 2 for 18 and the latter unlucky to finish with just 1 for 15. All credit must go to Plymtree who remained disciplined and professional and played the game with great spirit.
So with another seven wicket defeat in the book, Newton have got off to one of their worst starts but with many of these players capable of putting on a score, when it does all click into place, someone somewhere is going to get one heck of a beating!
