NPCC Season Review
04 Dec 2019
Newton Poppleford CC finally celebrated the end of the summer cricket season at the club's annual dinner on Saturday 30 November. The Cannon Inn, the clubs main supporter, hosted players and their families as another successful season of village cricket was toasted and annual awards handed out. Club Chairman Matthew Raistrick welcomed all to the evening and the clubs President Dave Jeffery was on hand to present the club awards.
Louis Adey claimed the clubs batting and bowling awards as leading run-scorer (597, averaging over 50) and wicket-taker (19). This capped a fine all-round season that saw him score his maidan club hundred.
The award of player of the season also went to Louis to complete a clean sweep of the main awards.
In terms of results, the club had a mixed season seeing as many wins as loses but more importantly, the opportunity to take part in some great cricket was available to young and old. This is perhaps best demonstrated by the club award for Young Player of the Season, won by Kieran Phillips. Kieran joined during the season and despite limited cricketing experience took 3 for 10 on 20Twenty debut, before becoming a regular in the team. Next up the coveted Presidents Trophy for the 'Catch of the Season' was eagerly anticipated. A first club award for the long-serving player and Fixture Secretary, Richard Coombs, was celebrated almost as much as his fine catch at point versus our neighbours Tipton Cricket Club.
The final award of the evening encapsulates everything that the spirt of cricket should be about as the club selected its Champagne Moment of the Season. Despite several very worthy nominations (please visit the club website for the full list) Andrew (Macca), Marsh won a close vote for his 5 for 17 versus Mount Ambrose. This feat achieved on his only appearance of the season in the clubs second last game of the season. This award reminds all, that winning and losing is not as important as enjoying and celebrating playing the game itself.
Newton Poppleford Cricket Club would like to thank all those in the local community that supported us during 2018. In particular, thanks go to local businesses Pride Hair Studios, Al Findlay.com, Woodleys Joinery, Four Elms Fruit Farm, Oak Tree Garage, and Potbury Funeral Sevices, that supported the club in 2019 through match ball sponsorship.
As stories of cricketing triumph and disaster were shared, stumps were finally drawn on the 2019 season. Heres looking forward to 2020!
