Newton Poppleford Cricket Club NPCC v All Saints on Sun 23 May 2010 at 14:15
Newton Poppleford Cricket Club Won By 6 Wickets
Match report
Newton Poppleford and All Saints have rekindled this match after an absence of six seasons and if future games are as closely fought as this one then a regular fixture should become compulsory, especially if they bring that glorious weather with them again.
With Newton asked to field it was the visitors who seemed to feel the heat most as Raistrick and Chaplin gave little away in the opening exchanges. The tireless Raistrick struck first when a fierce shot was expertly taken by Tom Clay at gully and he would have had more, finding the edge regularly only to see them flash through the slip cordon.
Isaac Thomas was next to profit when Coombs took a low effort at point and when Marsh put one through the middle, All Saints had laboured to 54 for 3 at the half way point. The visitors continued cautiously, with Last and House offering nothing but with wickets in hand they eventually accelerated. Another catch for Coombs off the returning Chaplin, a vintage stumping by Clay off Marsh and a terrific running catch by Chaplin off Thomas saw All Saints finish on 155 for 6.
Newton opened their reply with Chaplin and Coombs and the former was in no mood to hang around. With the field in tight Chaplin oozed confidence with some well placed shots but the partnership was broken when Coombs (6) was bowled trying to cut. The in-form Tom Clay (6) couldn`t repeat last weeks heroics when he top edged a simple chance but Chaplin was well in by now, and dominated the scoring.
Stott (3) was next to go when he pulled straight to mid-wicket and when Kenny Clay joined Chaplin, he was content to play the back up role. When Chaplin passed his fifty, Newton were well up with the asking rate but All Saints, sensing a wicket could change everything, came back at the hosts with some tight bowling and fielding and suddenly the game could have gone either way.
It swung back and forth again until Clay pulled three consecutive boundaries, but when he was athletically caught and bowled for 26, seven were still needed from the last two overs. But Chaplin was determined to see it out and ably supported by Cardwell, he finished 75 not out and the match won by 6 wickets with an over to spare.
