Ottery St Mary v Newton Poppleford Cricket Club NPCC on Sun 30 May 2010 at 14:15
Newton Poppleford Cricket Club Lost By 7 Wickets

Match report Newton Poppleford made the short trip to Ottery St Mary where they came up against a determined young side and came away decidedly second best.
Asked to bat, openers Chaplin and Coombs settled in to their now customary roles and didn`t seem in any danger until Coombs (7) played the wrong shot and was bowled. Chaplin (17) soon followed when a powerful drive was well taken at cover and when Stott (0) edged to backward point, Last and Clay had a recovery task on their hands.
They stuck to their task well, picking the few bad balls, but couldn`t find the acceleration that was so badly needed. When Clay (22) was caught they had taken the score to 76 but with 25 overs already used up. With time running out the wickets continued to fall, Last (19), Cardwell (8) and Goldthorpe (3) all trying but unable to really get going.
That Newton finished on 152 all out was down purely to the destructive power of Mathew Raistrick. Coming in with the score on 98 for 7 with just 8 overs left he took the attack to the bowlers and splayed them all round the ground. Well supported by Mathew Sach (7), he smashed 44 off just 26 balls including three huge sixes that ensured Newton had at least something to bowl at.
Unfortunately, right from the off of Ottery`s reply in never looked enough. Townsend and Mansfield looked completely in control and weren`t troubled by anything that Newton could throw at them, racing to 46 in just 10 overs. Thomas`s nagging persistence eventually paid off with two quick wickets when he trapped Mansfield lbw and had Owen caught second ball by Goldthorpe.
Newton`s cause wasn`t helped by three uncharacteristic dropped catches and had to wait until the 30th over before Chaplin bowled Reed with the score on 139. That two Ottery batsmen retired when they had reached their fifties only added salt to Newton`s wounds and the hosts wrapped up the victory with 7 overs to spare.
Captain Kenny Clay was philosophical in defeat “On our day we are a match for anyone but we just couldn`t get in gear today. All credit to Ottery, the team that played today are a credit to this club and we look forward to returning the hospitality at our place later in the summer”
