Match report Newton Poppleford entertained Tedburn St Mary on a day when both sides found runs at a premium and the game in the balance right to the end.
Asked to bat first Newton were soon in trouble when openers Tom Chaplin (4) and Coombs (7) departed with both going to some poor shot selection. Alex Raistrick (20) and Kenny Clay (15) at least showed more patience and determination but ducks for Tom Clay and Cardwell left Newton struggling at 62 for 6 after 20 overs.
The tail wagged enough to take Newton to three figures when Mathew Raistrick (11) employed his customary swing to be followed by a glorious cameo from Dave Chaplin (10) drafted in at the last moment and playing his first game for eight years . Thomas finished unbeaten on 16 and Newton were all out for 104 in only the 32nd over.
Wickets were needed quickly but when the usually frugal Thomas was hooked for six off his third ball it didn`t look like being Newton`s day. However, he resumed normal service when first Alex Raistrick took a skied effort and then a delayed stumping by Clay saw two wickets in two balls. With two more wickets all his own work sandwiching a terrific catch at short leg by Marsh off Mathew Raistrick, and the miserly Thomas had finished his spell with 4 for 23.
The match swung further in Newton`s way when Alex Raistrick produced a yorker with his first ball and Tedburn had slumped to 63 for 6 at the half way stage. With fellow speedster Tom Chaplin causing problems from the other end another wicket would see Tedburn`s tail exposed but the pairing of Rich and Wood defied every effort to dislodge them.
These two had time on their side but their swings and misses continued to give Newton some hope. But when Rich started to find the boundary with his one shot the game swung back to the visitors and when he eventually departed for 34 it was left to his partner Wood to take Tedburn over the line for a 3 wicket win.
