Newton Poppleford Cricket Club Lost By 10 Runs

Match report Newton Poppleford welcomed Birmingham tourists Clent CC to the Riverside ground and, after a quick head count, a twelve-a-side match was quickly arranged, ensuring the whole touring party could play. Fittingly for the day, there were four Father and Sons involved for the home side.
The visitors elected to bat first and were soon one down when Mathew Raistrick struck with a straight one. Clent didn`t let this effect them and scored rapidly until Raistrick struck again after the batsman had given him the charge.

With a plethora of bowlers at his disposal skipper Kenny Clay rotated his strike force and it was Alex Raistrick who struck next when Tom Clay took a smart catch at gully. Clent continued to race along at five an over and although they all bowled well it wasn`t until seventh change bowler Zac Thomas, who got one to seam away, that another wicket was taken.
Tom Chaplin also got amongst the wickets but it was Alex Raistrick who was the pick of the bowlers, finishing with 4 for 31, but Clent had set a challenging 177.
The home side needed to get out of the blocks quickly and both openers obliged with Chaplin getting off to his usual explosive start. But wickets soon tumbled when first Chaplin (19) inexplicably chased a wide one, Coombs (7) lbw playing down the wrong line and Tom Clay (1) well bowled.
Sach didn`t trouble the scorers when he played inside a straight one and when Kenny Clay (19) was caught miss-timing a drive the ship was in desperate need of steadying.
Mature heads were needed and it was youngsters Alex Raistrick and the guesting Charlie Miles who led the fight back. With some smart running between the wickets coupled with some exquisite boundary shots these two got back up with the run-rate until Miles (17) was bowled. Mathew Hill offered great support until he lost partner Alex Raistrick (34) just when he looked well set.

Zac Thomas (10) showed no fear but when Mathew Raistrick (1) and George House (0) departed Hill was running out of partners. With fifty needed from the last five overs Hill (38no) launched in to an all out assault, smashing two huge sixes he almost pulled it off but Newton fell agonisingly just 10 runs short.
