Newton Poppleford Cricket Club NPCC v Plymtree on Sun 09 May 2010 at 14:15
Newton Poppleford Cricket Club Won By 5 wickets
Match report
After three early season defeats in which Newton Poppleford hadn`t disgraced themselves it was a determined side that took to the field to take on a youthful Plymtree team on what was an un-seasonally cold day at the recreation ground.
Newton quickly made Plymtree`s decision to bat look a bad one when Mathew Raistrick struck in his first over, causing the young opener to play on. He added to this in his second over when the faintest tickle nudged the bails off and when Chaplin broke his duck for the season from the other end, Pymtree were three down with just 14 on the board.
It went from bad to worse for the visitors when Kenny Clay`s quick reaction caught the batsman out of his crease and when Marsh took a regulation catch at mid-on to be followed up with a wicket of his own, Plymtree were all over the place at 25 for 6.
That Plymtree ended up 71 all out gives credit to some sensible lower order batting but Newton`s George House also used his head, returning credible figures of 2 for 26.
Tom Chaplin opened Newton`s reply with Stephen Manning who was playing his last game for the club. Having taken up the offer to play Saturday cricket, all Newton players wish him all the best with this new challenge. Obviously not wanting to make a scene, he didn`t want to trouble the scorers and when Chaplin went the same way Newton were making hard work of it.
With Tom Clay promoted to three on the back of some strong recent performances the game took on a familiar feel when Stott holed out for 4. When Tom Clay was joined by father Kenny an explosive end to the game was envisaged, but the introduction of Petit, a young spinner of some potential caused the match to briefly swing the visitors way when he bowled first Kenny Clay (11) and then Cakewell (2) with two sublime deliveries.
But Tom Clay was in fine form and not troubled by the spin he pulled him for three consecutive boundaries to finish 33 not out and Newton were winners by five wickets.
Captain Kenny Clay was particularly impressed “It`s fantastic to see the young players out there showing no fear and I was really pleased with George House getting those two wickets. But I suppose I better get used to Tom scoring more runs than me now - hopefully he wont go on about it too much!”
