Newton Poppleford Cricket Club Lost By 7 Wickets

Match report A belated start for NPCC saw them travel to Broadclyst for their first game of the season and judging by this performance, the rain of the previous two Sundays had caused a bit of rust to set in.
It started badly when Newton were inserted under overcast conditions and openers Last and Coombs struggled with the pace and swerve achieved by the Clyst bowlers. As the runs barely matched the overs bowled, Coombs was the first to miss-judge the swing, LBW for 6, scored off one shot. With Clay undone by another vicious in-swinger, Stott smartly c&b and Last edging behind, Newton`s top four had yielded a paltry 18 runs.
Alex Raistrick and Cardwell dug in and got the score moving for a while before Alex was eventually bowled for a top-scoring 27. Cardwell went the same way for 17 and it was left to Mathew Raistrick to salvage something respectable to bowl at. A few agricultural swings yielded four boundaries before his and the last 3 wickets went down, leaving Newton on 99 all out.
After a fabulous tea – rated at 9 out of ten by our resident tea experts Marsh and Cardwell – Newton took to the field determined to make a fist of it and when a couple of skied shots didn`t drop kindly the game slowly drifted away from them. With the sun now shining Newton`s bowlers couldn`t quite get the ball to do as much and Broadclyst`s batsmen took full advantage.
A below par fielding performance was only enlightened by Cardwell`s catch-of-the-season contender, taking it one-handed whilst falling backwards on the deep mid-wicket boundary.
Broadclyst duly wrapped up a seven wicket win leaving Newton, glad to get their first game out of the way, safe in the knowledge that they surely can`t be as bad again, or can we?
