Newton Poppleford Cricket Club NPCC v Bridford on Sun 25 May 2008 at
Newton Poppleford Cricket Club Won By 6 Wickets

Match report With the fixture in doubt due to the early morning rain a brave decision to get the game on was thoroughly vindicated by the afternoons` weather. No-one was more surprised than visiting Bridford who travelled with ten men through monsoon conditions to find an oasis of sunshine at the recreation ground.
Keen not to let Bridford`s all-pace attack loose with the new ball skipper-for-the-day Coombs was grateful to win the toss and insert the visitors on a now fast drying wicket.
The opening pair of Raistricks bowled with great pace but it was the younger one who found his line and length to cause Bridford problems. Alex finally got his reward with a wicket after first having his victim dropped behind. With a plethora of bowlers at his disposal Coombs elected to stick with youth and it was Burton who struck twice with a well placed catches from Thomas and Alex Raistrick.
Bridfords batsmen upped the pace with Thomas the main recipient and were well set at 103 for 3 with 15 overs to go. A score of 170 plus looked likely but Thomas had other ideas and produced an inspired spell to take three quick wickets in his last two overs. He added to this with a direct hit from gulley and suddenly Bridford were struggling. The introduction of Needs caused more problems, bowling consistently well he induced an edge from the dangerous Blackie enabling Last to make up for his earlier drop. When Marsh added the coup-de-grace, Bridford had lost 6 wickets for 13 runs to finish on 116 all-out.
Now Newton`s batsmen hadn`t got anywhere near this kind of total so far this season so it was with some trepidation when openers Last and Coombs took to the field. With Blackie steaming in from one end and a tricky left-arm-over from the other the omens didn`t look good. But somehow they dug-in and started to look comfortable although the score didn`t move too much. Even after Coombs top-edged one to depart first again an air of confidence was filtering through and Stott and Last soon started to play some excellent shots, picking off the bad balls, rotating the strike and finding the boundary with pleasing regularity. These two put on a 63 before the partnership was broken when Stott was well bowled for 38. This brought debutant Cole to the crease, playing his first game for nine years he produced a cultured display until well caught at mid-wicket. Last continued to score until becoming the returning Blackie`s only victim to finish on 33 and it was left to Cardwell and Alex Raistrick to take Newton over the line with five overs to spare.
Newton`s first victory of the season was a well deserved team effort with the bowlers bowling and the batsmen batting, simple isn`t it?
