Woodbury v Newton Poppleford Cricket Club 1st Team on Sun 08 Jun 2008 at
Newton Poppleford Cricket Club Lost By 24 Runs

Match report Newton travelled to Woodbury on a baking hot day and when Captain Clay won the toss and inserted the hosts a few eyebrows were raised. However the canny Clay had learnt that the wicket was under a few inches of water the day before and a few damp spots might produce some interesting bounce.
Woodbury`s openers weren`t going to hang around and a succession of lofted drives found the gaps but only produced two`s rather than the boundaries a dry pitch would have given. One lofted shot too many gave Thomas the first wicket and the introduction of Stone, who had the knack of finding the soft spots, brought the second. Unfortunately it wasn`t until the 25th over that the next wicket went down, rewarding Alex Raistrick for a tireless effort, but Woodbury had moved on and were well set on 103 for 3.
The game then started to swing back Newton`s way when some precision field placings by Clay enabled Mathew Raistrick to swallow up a catch off the bowling of Marsh. The re-introduction of Thomas from the other end also proved a master stroke as catches by Coombs, who waited an age for a skied shot to land, and then Last, who took a smart chance at gully sandwiched an LBW ,a clean bowled and a turned down hat-trick chance. Marsh also struck with a straight one and just when Woodbury`s opener Ingham threatened to carry his bat he dropped it and was run out. The returning senior Raistrick wrapped up the innings and Woodbury were all-out for 123.
Runs on the board still have to be got and today was a little different as the first run of Newton`s innings was scored by Clay, batting at number five. First Last, Manning and then Coombs succumbed to the Left arm opening bowlers to leave Newton on 0 for 3, a depth never plumbed before. Clay eventually got the runs ahead of the wickets as he and Stott attempted to restore some order before Stott was fourth down with the score on 23. When Stone became the fourth duck of the day Clay was joined by Cardwell and these two started swinging the game back Newton`s way with some classy shots until Clay was well caught for a top scoring 40. Alex Raistrick became the fifth duck, joining the exclusive Primary Club before father joined him back in the hutch and it was left to Thomas to salvage something from the ashes. With five-an-over required the win was still on and Woodbury had gone quiet until first Cardwell and then Thomas holed-out to well taken catches on the boundary to leave Newton all-out for a never-say-die 99.
