Newton Poppleford Cricket Club NPCC v Newton St Cyres on Sun 17 Aug 2008 at
Newton Poppleford Cricket Club Lost By 6 Runs
Match report
The battle of the Newton`s took place last Sunday as Newton Poppleford entertained Newton St Cyres in what turned out to be a high scoring match that in all probability shouldn`t have been.
Captain Clay inserted the visitors on a damp but true wicket and Newton`s first pair sent down a maiden each before A Raistrick found a thick edge, only to see it put down at gully. The lucky recipient Brown then got the judge of the conditions and started to find the shorter boundaries well within reach. Brown`s charmed life continued when chipping straight to mid-on and he took full advantage to push the score along to 89 at the half way stage.
A succession of chances to stop Brown`s scoring spree were spilled and when he passed his century the applause was only drowned out by demands for his lottery numbers. It took a smart stumping by Clay off the bowling of Last to finally dislodge him, and with the score on 168 with more than ten overs left, something special was needed to get the home side back in the game.
That something was delivered by a sublime over from Chaplin when first Stott showed everyone how it was done with a one-hander, followed by an edge behind to Clay. The attacking fielders needn`t have been worried about spilling the hat-trick ball as Chaplin removed his off stump to cap a wonderful burst of precision bowling.
With the breaks firmly put on the visitors slowed to a final tally of 222, still a big ask for Newton`s batsmen.
The home sides reply started badly when Chaplin couldn`t repeat his heroics and when Cardwell soon followed it was left to Coombs and Stott to restore some order. Having both returned from their holidays their relaxed approach got them back up with the run-rate until Stott miss-pulled bringing Clay to the crease. These two forged a fifty partnership and looked well set to continue until the drinks break gremlin came in to play.
Clay departed for a typically robust 32 before Coombs fell for an uncharacteristic 47. With over a century still to get but twenty overs to do it in up strides the in-form Burton. After passing his fifty in the blink of an eye, he single-handedly brought the home side to the brink of victory before being caught on the cusp of the deep mid-wicket boundary for 75.
Newton just weren`t able to find the last runs for victory and fell an agonising seven short of the target.
