Newton Poppleford Cricket Club NPCC v Tipton St John on Sun 07 Sep 2008 at
Newton Poppleford Cricket Club Won By 10 Wickets
Match report
With the corresponding fixture just one of many to be washed out this season, the break in the weather held out just long enough to allow this keenly contested local derby to take place.
The wicket was damp as usual, so it was a good toss for the home skipper to win and Captain Clay duly asked Tipton to bat.
Ed Thomas and Alex Raistrick opened the attack for Newton and it was Thomas`s nagging length that induced M Williamson to chip straight to point where Manning opened his claws to snap up the chance. Thomas struck again with his metronome efficiency when Pace shot straight to the covers where Burton had just arrived. Thomas cleaned up Tipton`s top order when the dangerous Quick looped one to Stone at mid-off and Blackburn paddled one around the corner to A Raistrick to finish his spell with four for six including six maidens.
With Tipton now in trouble at 29 for 4 Marsh and Stone came on to turn the screw. In Marsh`s first over P Williamson shot high over mid-off and to everyone bar Cardwell it looked safe, but somehow he made up the ground and with a stifled cry of “mine” he leapt to take a terrific catch. Two balls later and Gibbins was gone, with a thick edge to backward point.
Tipton were now 36 for 6 and soon fell further in trouble when J Birch smacked a shot that Burton plucked out of the air and Stone claimed another wicket when he found the middle stump of D O`Higgins. Tipton`s tail end collapsed when Marsh bowled J Williamson and Stone induced an edge from Chanance to leave the visitors all out for 43.
With no early tea Newton`s opening pair of Last and Coombs went out with specific instructions from the skipper. Last was to tie up one end and Coombs was to not get out. These two took no chances in the early exchanges but Coombs picked off a couple of bad balls until the canny O`Higgins came on. He had Coombs playing all around for a couple of overs and when he did eventually find an edge it was put down behind. This proved to be the only chance and it was no real surprise when Newton passed the mark for an emphatic ten wicket win.
