Thorverton v Newton Poppleford Cricket Club NPCC on Sun 05 Aug 2007 at
Newton Poppleford Cricket Club Won By 29 Runs

Match report Newton Travelled to Thorverton for the first of four successive away matches, and with a youthful looking opposition, coupled with a hot afternoon, winning the toss and batting first looked to be the best option. When Captain Clay called incorrectly, his expression turned from gloom to glee when the home side elected to field.
Newton opened with Last and Stott but were quickly one down when Stott cut powerfully straight to the cover fielder who took the catch but retired with a badly swollen finger. With regular run-machine Morison away, the in-form skipper was next to the crease and he and Last scored at a consistent rate. With the bowling attack not troubling either batsmen, getting yourself out was the most likely way to depart and Last was unlucky to chop one on to his stumps when well set on 15. With the returning Coombs in next, it looked like his mind was still on the beach as he failed to get bat on to ball, content to run the byes offered by some wayward bowling. Clay was in belligerent form however and showed runs were on offer with some powerful stroke play, Coombs duly responded with four boundaries from his first scoring shots. These two continued to plunder the Thorverton attack putting on 94, until Clay, having pocketed another half century was bowled by Rhodes. With 10 overs to go a score of 200 looked possible, but some clever fielding restricted Cardwell and Coombs to picking off singles until Coombs holed-out to deep mid-on for 46. Newtons innings finished on 187 for 5, possibly 20 short of where it should`ve been.
Thorverton`s reply started brightly until Thomas picked up a wicket, this brought Keenber to the crease and he showed his experience by continually pinching the strike and keeping up a constant chatter of encouragement to his youthful colleagues. Keenber was also helped by some unusually batsmen-friendly bowling and punished Needs, Alex Raistrick and Cardwell, passing his half-century in the process. With Thorverton well-up with the run-rate and only 45 needed from the last 9 overs, Clay was looking to who he could try next. Up steps young James Burton, he sends down an awful slow full-toss and Keenber sends the shot straight to Cardwell, departing for a innings anchoring 78. The remaining batsmen all contrived to get themselves out, with Burton picking up 4 for 11, Marsh 2 for 24 and the innings finished on 159.
