Sidbury v Newton Poppleford Cricket Club NPCC on Sun 12 Aug 2007 at
Newton Poppleford Cricket Club Won By 4 Wickets
Match report
Newton made the short hop over to Sidbury looking to do the double over their near neighbours. With the home match earlier in the season ending in a nail-biter, this one was to prove no different.
With Sidbury electing to bat, Newton opened with Needs and Mathew Raistrick and it was Needs who struck first, enticing Trawford to edge to gully where Morison leapt to take the catch. Needs, showing greater accuracy and control than last week, struck again when O`Connor edged to Stott at first slip. With the outfield a bit shaggy in places, hitting over the top might bring runs but at a cost, so it proved when Coombs took a regulation catch to dismiss Bishop off the bowling of Mathew Raistrick.
21 for 3 was soon 22 for 4 when Needs again found an edge. Needs finished his spell with 3 for 20 and Mathew Raistrick 2 for 12 leaving Sidbury in all sorts of bother at 35 for 5.
It was at this point that Newton`s Stephen Manning suffered what appeared to be an horrendous dislocation of his little finger whilst fielding at mid-off. With no-one prepared to look at it let alone put it back in, it was off to hospital for the unlucky player and Newton were left one batsman short.
There was no let up for Sidbury when Alex Raistrick took a sharp caught and bowled, and Marsh soon enticed Bastyan to loop one to Cardwell. Marsh with 3 for 15 and Alex Raistrick with 2 for 16 then mopped up the tail and Sidbury were dismissed for 78 in the 26th over.
So, a leisurely afternoon in the sun, knocking off the runs for a 10 wicket win then? Don`t be silly! This is Newton we are talking about! And Sidbury`s bowlers certainly had another script in mind.
Sidbury`s O`Connor was to prove the chief tormentor, he started by clean bowling Last, followed this up with the same for Coombs before Baxter got in on the act, taking Stott`s wicket with one that seamed a mile. When Morison chipped to gully and Alex Raistrick went first ball, the gas and air that Newton`s Manning had just had his finger re-set with was probably needed more by Captain Clay, who was left shaking his head in disbelief at the carnage he had just witnessed. Thankfully this is a skipper in form and with partners running out he took the initiative. Clay bludgeoned a couple of boundaries, pulled a six off O`Connor, who finished with 5 for 21, and when Cardwell departed, Clay and Mathew Raistrick saw Newton home when Clay launched another maximum in to the trees!
