Uplyme v Newton Poppleford Cricket Club NPCC on Sun 26 Aug 2007 at
Newton Poppleford Cricket Club Lost By 88 Runs
Match report
With last weeks game another washout, Newton travelled to Uplyme in some gloriously “unseasonal” weather. The home side elected to have first use of what looked like a good batting track but found it hard going against Newton`s opening pair. Matt Raistrick bowled with pace and precision, taking his first wicket in his third consecutive maiden. Needs also struck with Alex Raistrick taking a good catch at point. Matt Raistrick, confirming his ability to dismiss top-order batsmen, finished his 8 overs with 3 for 29, and Needs with 1 for 26.
With these two out of the way, Uplyme started to consolidate their innings. Opener Bray was joined by first-team player Batey and these two found the boundary with increasing regularity. Some half-chances came and went but just as they threatened to take the game away from Newton, Morison was introduced to the attack. He took a smart c&b to dismiss Batey and followed up with another wicket in his second over. Bray went on to make 65 until Marsh caught him off the bowling of Burton. A score of 200 or more looked possible until Morison produced three gems in his last over to finish with figures of 5 for 24 and Uplyme all out for 185.
Newton`s reply got off to a bad start when Last was lbw in the first over and was compounded when Alex Raistrick soon followed. Morison was next to go when a thick inside edge dislodged a bail and when Burton was dismissed Newton were 31 for 4 in only the eighth over. Opener Coombs was joined by Matt Raistrick and these two attempted to dig-in. When they had seen off the pace of Batey, Matt Raistrick took a particular liking to the slow, looping deliveries of Swain and he smashed one of the biggest sixes of the season, sending the ball a country mile over the fielder at deep mid-on. Unfortunately the break to look for the ball did him no favours and he was bowled the next ball for 20. Coombs had scored steadily but eventually departed lbw to top score with 21.
With the game virtually up, Alsford and Goldthorpe started to enjoy themselves, particularly when Goldthorpe, fending off a beamer, was disappointed with himself for “not picking his googly”. Newton were eventually all out for 98 and it`s a credit to both sides that the game was played in an excellent sporting spirit.
