Newton Poppleford Cricket Club NPCC v Countess Weir on Sun 02 Sep 2007 at
Newton Poppleford Cricket Club Lost By 3 Runs

Match report Newton entertained a Countess Weir side that included a number of players fresh from winning their league. Not surprisingly the visitors elected to bat, more to let the hangovers subside than anything to do with the wicket.
The visitors found it hard going against the disciplined attack of M Raistrick and Thomas, both bowlers frugal in their opening spell yielding just 25 runs. Alex Raistrick took a catch off his fathers bowling before the introduction of Marsh produced two quick dismissals: the first a stumping for Clay after the youthful number three had audaciously advanced down the wicket, the second a catch for Coombs leaving the visitors on 55 for 3 at the half way stage.
Marsh continued to cause problems for the new batsmen and when Cardwell snaffled a chance after juggling it off every part of his body, Marsh c&b the next batsman to leave himself a hat-trick chance. With the “Jug” avoided Countess Weir started to accelerate with opener Griffin joined by Darke enjoying an 86 run partnership. The innings finished on 173 with Griffin making 65 and Marsh taking five for 27.
Newton`s reply started steadily with Last and Coombs keeping up with the run rate thanks mainly to Countess Weir`s pace attack who sent down 20 wides in the first 14 overs. When the fifty partnership came up only six scoring shots had troubled the scorers. When Coombs was caught for 18 and Last was bowled for 14 a seasons best 62 opening partnership was ended.
With a modest five an over required and plenty of batting to come, the chase was definitely on. But when Clay departed for 11 and Stott for 6, Morison and Cardwell had some work to do. These two slowly got the better of the attack and inexorably chalked off the runs keeping Newton on course for a tight finish.
These two looked well set until Cardwell, having stroked three exquisite cover drives, chased a wide one and was stumped for 29. Morison departed for the same score when he edged behind and Newton were looking for the tail to get them over the line. When a further three quick wickets went down, Stone gave a glimmer of hope but with nine needed from the last over Newton fell agonisingly short with just three runs the difference.
Next week sees the eagerly awaited derby with Tipton. With the away fixture washed out and with honours even from last year, a fine sporting encounter is anticipated.
