Newton Poppleford Cricket Club NPCC v Tipton St John on Sun 09 Sep 2007 at
Newton Poppleford Cricket Club Won By 4 Wickets
Match report
On Sunday Newton entertained their friends and fellow artisans Tipton St John. With the bragging-rights for the season going to the victors, a tense encounter was envisaged. Special thanks must go to Jerry Stott for ensuring the wicket and outfield were in top condition, something he has done tirelessly all season.
Tipton elected to bat first confident of putting on a score with the quality of their batting. Newton`s bowlers are also in form and after Thomas had opened with a typically penetrative over, Mathew Raistrick found the edge of Blackburn`s bat and the ergonomically placed Clay took the catch.
Newton were aware of the need to get the free-scoring Tolley out early and when he edged one from Thomas, the first of a series of catches went down. Opener Jones was the main beneficiary with two half chances lost at gully and one at point. When these two batsmen had advanced the score to 85 for 1 at the halfway stage, Newton were left reflecting on what might`ve been.
Just when Tipton looked to be taking the game away from Newton, Tolley departed for 42 when Coombs took a skied shot off the bowling of Marsh. Shaw was next to go for 10 with Stone taking an excellent catch over his shoulder and when Jones was bowled by Cardwell for 55, Newton had made a good recovery resulting in Tipton`s total of 157 for 8 being possibly 50 short of where they threatened to be.
Newton`s reply started steadily with Last tying up one end allowing Coombs to keep the score ticking over. Tipton`s Joe Birch was causing problems with his pace and bounce but it was Shaw who struck first, sneaking one through Last`s defences. Coombs looked comfortable until Joe Birch got him to play on when on 20 bringing Newton`s leading run-scorers, Clay and Morison together.
Morison was in confident form and these two put on 28 before Clay was caught in the covers for 10. Stott was content to give strike to Morison who continued to plunder the bad balls and this, coupled with some uncharacteristically sloppy fielding allowed 43 to be put on before Stott departed for 15.
Morison continued to receive strong support from first Cardwell and then Alex Raistrick and when he passed his half century only 30 were required from the last 10 overs. Morison duly hit the winning runs for an unbeaten 69 with six overs still to spare.
The match was played with plenty of friendly banter as befits the respect between these two sides and sport was definitely the winner on this occasion.
