Tedburn St Mary v Newton Poppleford Cricket Club NPCC on Sun 30 Sep 2007 at
Newton Poppleford Cricket Club Lost By 2 Wickets
Match report
Newton rounded off their season with a trip to Tedburn St Mary. With a strong batting line up on paper and an artificial wicket with short boundaries, Her Majesty Kenny Clay elected to bat first.
Newton`s openers Last and Coombs found the early Tedburn attack tight but looked comfortable. Unable to find the boundary they picked off runs at regular intervals, eventually accelerating the score with some hard hitting, passing their fifty partnership in the 14th over. Coombs, as is the norm, was first to go, bowled for 21.
With a firm foundation laid, Morison took an instant liking to the bowling, cutting two powerful shots through the covers until a “yes, no, yes” call by Last resulted in him run out for 11. When Stott departed for 2, Last for 19, Cardwell for 3 and Manning for a duck, Newton`s middle order had collapsed with 4 wickets lost and just 19 runs added in 10 overs.
Runs were desperately needed and when Clay was joined by Alex Raistrick these two set about the Tedburn attack with Alex thumping two huge sixes on his way to a creditable 23 and when Clay departed to top score with 27, a quick cameo from Mathew Raistrick and Ben Stone took Newton`s score to 154 for 8.
With Newton`s total 30 runs short of being competitive, quick wickets were needed and when a sharp run out from Alex Raistrick brought the first and his Father Mathew bowled a straight one to take the second, Newton were in with a shout.
Marsh bowled a frugal spell of none for 21 and Mathew Raistrick 1 for 23 before Tedburn settled down and started getting ahead of the run rate. Both Alex Raistrick, 1 for 44 and Ben Stone 1 for 34 bowled well but took some punishment before Cardwell and Morison set up a nervous finish for Tedburn. With just 20 runs needed from the last 10 overs these two slowed the rate to a snails pace with Cardwell taking wickets consistently to finish with 3 for 11. Tedburn eventually crossed the line to win a hugely enjoyable game by 2 wickets.
Thanks must go to Umpire Pete Parkinson and especially his wife Val who has scored nearly all Newton`s games this season, without these two the club just wouldn`t be the same.
Newton play with a strong team spirit and every player has contributed to winning more games than loosing this season but the individual plaudits must go to Andrew Marsh, leading wicket taker, James Morison, leading run scorer and highest individual score of 98, Alan Cardwell most catches and Alex Raistrick for the best individual bowling perfor
