Overnight rain made batting problematic against Newton Poppleford on Sunday, but skipper David Birch trusted a strong batting line-up on paper to set the visitors a challenging total. All went well until Kevin Jones was caught at slip off Matt Raistrick during an excellent spell of 2-10. Then Phil Tolley’s dismissal for 38, caught behind off David Sykes, started a collapse which saw 3 more wickets fall without a run being added and drew some quizzical glances in the captain’s direction as his decision to bat first looked increasingly dubious.

At 47-5 Tipton were in deep trouble but were rescued by Steve Shaw and Adam Gibbins, who added 38 before Shaw was bowled by one that kept low. Gibbins continued to bat with great maturity and built partnerships with Dawson and Birch of 22 and 33 respectively. As Tipton’s total reached respectability, Gibbins attacked more confidently, his clean hitting taking him to 46 not out and the total to 162-9.

The visitors began quickly with Richard Coombes dispatching anything short, but Shaw and Birch gradually imposed themselves and gained control. The innings began to implode as Birch took 3 wickets in two overs, with Shaw following up with one to reduce Newton to 29-4. Skipper Kenny Clay tried to hit his side out of trouble but fell to a second catch by Shaw off Dave O’Higgins. Birch finished with 3-22, O’Higgins with 3-16 and Dave Dawson had a good day behind the wicket with three smart catches to reduce the visitors to 91 all out and maintain Tipton’s winning start to the season.
