Newton Poppleford Cricket Club NPCC v Tipton St John on Sun 04 May 2014 at 14:30
Newton Poppleford Cricket Club Won By 137 Runs
Match report
It was a bright but brisk day that greeted this early season East Devon derby. With the Otter Trophy the prize, Pops skipper Clay opted to bat on an excellent surface superbly crafted by Colin from Sidmouth CC.
Newton`s openers Thomas and Newbury made a cagey start, just a single coming off the first four overs, before they settled in. Thomas was the more aggressive but just one short of the fifty partnership he fell for 28. Tom Clay was determined to continue the attack and duly found the boundary with increasing accuracy. Newbury was content to play the straight man although his three attempts at a reverse sweep did raise a few chuckles. With the score on 97 at the halfway stage Tipton`s introduction of O`Higgins has heralded a Newton collapse in the past but Clay had other ideas. He plundered 30 from his first two overs and raced to 74 until he was superbly caught by Singh running in from deep mid wicket. Newbury eventually went for a solid 39 when bowled by Gibbs but Newton, with wickets in hand were looking for a big total. Alex Raistrick lost partner Hill for a duck but joined by Coombs they moved the score past 200. Joe Birch was the pick of Tipton`s bowlers but even when he bowled Coombs for 22 he couldn`t stop Raistrick from passing his fifty before he was bowled for 68 by David Birch. Newton had amassed 263 for 6, believed to be their highest total on record.
The Tipton reply got off to a bad start when Gibbins found Lee`s gaping palms at square leg and Marsh had his second wicket when Robinson, who had launched him for six first ball, was bowled. When Quick was next to go, Matt Raistrick producing a rare yorker, Tipton were looking for a partnership. They nearly got one when first Gillam and then Mills thought attack was the best form of defence. These two moved the score along to 84 at the halfway but wickets were running out and it was Hunter with 4 for 22 that did the damage. All Tiptons batsmen made starts but Alex Raistrick pouched three catches to steal the man of the match award and Tiptons reply was ended on 126.
