Newton Poppleford Cricket Club NPCC v Lympstone on Thu 28 Apr 2016 at 18.15
Newton Poppleford Cricket Club Won by 6 wickets
Match report
NEWBIES SAVE THE DAY!
Newton Poppleford bowled very well to reduced a good Lympstone side to just 128 off their 20 overs. Teenagers Tobi Pugsley and Luke Raistrick bowled very well to earn figures of 2 for 5 and 2 for 18 respectively. Impressive fielding from Ross Chatwood saw him take 3 important catches, whilst C.Turner, A.Cox and G.House picked up the other wickets.
128 can be a very difficult score to chase down when players must retire at 25, and the sun is setting so quickly. This was made much more difficult for NPCC thanks to the number 1 and 3 bats. Opener Isaac Thomas started the 2015 season by getting out on the very first ball of the very first game, earning a 'Platinum Duck'. Whilst he did not repeat this achievement, he was dismissed after a shocking choice of shot for a 3-ball duck. Number 3 bat Pugsley was out 2nd ball, leaving the score at 0 for 2 off the first over. Tony Cox, along with newbies Anning and Oldfield built good partnerships and ket the run rate high, in order to revive the run chase. Cox was out for 13, whilst Anning and Oldfield both retired not out. New T20 captain, George House came to the crease and was back in the hutch fairly speedily after a quick 28 not out. However, in an important innings, which saw him finish on 21 not out and hit a 6 to win the game, Ross Chatwood steered Newton Pop to a win with 3.3 overs remaining.
Thanks to everyone involved in making the fixture possible. And a big thanks to new players Anning and Oldfield, who marked the start of their club careers with solid all round performances. We hope to see them very regularly!
After this win, Newton Pop are precariously positioned on 199 club wins from 378 games. Sunday sees us take on Tipton st John at home. We have not lost to Tipton in 40 over matches since 2011, and have not lost at home since 2009. With a strong team already picked, could this be the chance for a 9th consecutive win vs the rivals and the 200th club win?
