Newton Poppleford Cricket Club NPCC v Marldon on Sun 15 May 2016 at 14.00
Newton Poppleford Cricket Club Won 9 Wickets

Match report A gorgeous day greeted the Newton Poppleford team on Sunday, it looked like the perfect day to bat first. Skipper Clay chose the bottom wicket over the one played on by Exmouth III’s yesterday, some long grass on a length unnerving the skipper. Marldon had proved a difficult team last year, although that may have had something to do with the ‘alteration’ to the rules when playing at Marldon.
The toss was lost by the home skipper and NPCC went, rather begrudgingly, into the field. It was House and Hunter who took the new ball and started well keeping things tight and not giving away any loose balls. It was House who struck first, bowling Marldon’s Nos. 2 with a delivery which snuck between bat and pad. Hunter was the better of the two bowlers, consistently bowling a good straight line and forcing the batsmen to play. He finished with figures of 0 for 23 off 6 and can consider himself unfortunate not to pick up a wicket. House finished 1 for 4 off 6 including 3 maidens, although for the son of a tree surgeon, struggled to find the timber and bowled a little too wide to get the batsmen to play. Captain Clay was about to ask a lot of a bowler who up to this game had only bowled 41.3 overs in 40 over games. Raistrick Jnr was by far and away the star bowler of the day bowling a sometimes unplayable spinning ball. Unsurprisingly he picked up 4 good wickets, and was unfortunate not to have his 5fer. Last year’s game saw a very good catch from Thomas Moore, diving away at cover to pouch a firmly struck cover drive. It appears this may have become a regular occurrence as Big Brother Alex took a quite outstanding catch to give Luke his 3rd wicket. It is definitely a contender for catch of the season. Raistrick finished with very good figures of 4 for 29 off 8. The other half to Raistrick’s fearsome bowling attack was Chatwood who reminded us all just what he could do when it was his time. Not only bowling with good pace, but good areas and causing the batsmen all sorts of problems. Chatwood was unlucky not to pick up more wickets and finished with figures of 1 for 15 from 7 including 3 well controlled maidens. It was left to Adey Snr and Adey Jnr to mop up the tail and they did so very convincingly. Both picked up a wicket and kept their bowling fairly tight going at 4 and 4.5 respectively. Adey Snr finished with 1 for 16 off 4 and Jnr with 1 for 18 off 4.3. The NPCC team had bowled Marldon out for 103 and conditions suggested it wouldn’t be too much of a struggle, but as NPCC have proved time and time again that scores of just 100 can be the proverbial banana skin!
Thomas and Anning opened up and started striking the ball well early on. The two openers remained consistently above the required run rate of 2.57. When Anning fell for a well made 31 the score stood at 60 and the win looked assured. Raistrick joined the Thomas who had made a solid 26*. Thankfully Newton Poppleford avoided the banana skin and Thomas finished the game with a 6 over mid-wicket. Thomas finished 41* which set the game up and Raistrick finished 27*. It was a complete performance with bat and ball and a good 9 wicket win.
