Match report A cold breeze blew through Newton Poppleford as Marldon arrived to the Riverside ground. Newton Poppleford lost the toss and were asked to bat first on a tough, slow wicket which would see some low bounce throughout both innings.
NPCC sent out I.Thomas and P.Newbury to start proceedings. Newbury fell quickly after being bowled for 6 and was replaced by Louis Adey. Thomas and Adey began to lay the foundations for the N.pop innings, with Adey the more aggressive of the two. The pair ran well between the wickets and with Adey consistently finding the boundary, the scoreboard was ticking over nicely. It was Thomas who departed first, bowled for a slow 34. Adey followed shortly after, stumped for a more than useful 50 off just 28 balls. The game was finely balanced with the score 99 for 3 after 16 overs. The momentum swung towards Marldon as 3 more N.Pop wickets fell with the score reaching just 112. However, Newton Pop grabbed the initiative with captain Kenny Clay and his son Tom Clay (whose late arrival to the fixture was a blessing) at the crease. The pair added 76 together, with the younger Clay smashing some lusty blows on his way to a 30 ball 50. Once TC was out for 52, Kenny took over the role of the ‘big hitter’, adding some boundaries to his personal score. Kenny was out for a very good 40 and the remaining batsmen followed without troubling the scorers. Newton Pop finished on a very reasonable 208, with contributions throughout the innings giving the home side a strong total.

N.Pop came out to field with last year’s leading wicket taker Chris Davis opening the bowling alongside Louis Adey. Davis struck first with a good LBW, before Adey removed the dangerous H.Ward. Ward has scored two hundreds in his last two appearances vs Newton Pop. This match he was somewhat surprisingly dismissed for just 17. The opening duo found success again, each claiming another scalp. C.Davis would finish with figures of 2 for 28 off 8 overs, whilst Louis ended with 2 for 24 off his 8. Again the game was finely balanced, with NPCC just slight favourites as Marldon found themselves 58 for 4 after the first 15 overs.
The next phase of the game would prove significant. R.Coombs was brought into the attack, but struggled with his line, bowling just the three overs and conceding 26 runs. At the other end, Leigh Adey took the ball and did a good job even with a somewhat small straight and offside boundary. He too would end wicketless, conceding 35 runs off his 6 overs. By this time, Marldon’s young number 5 bat was rebuilding the innings alongside his older companion. The pair kept a very good run rate throughout their innings. With the lack of availability of bowlers this week, the ball was reluctantly thrown to T.Clay and then I.Thomas to try and get N.Pop back into the game. Again, they were unsuccessful and frustratingly, both were too expensive considering the late stage of the game.
Our final hope rested on Paul Newbury, who had been practising his spin bowling from the slips all innings. Amazingly, the last ball of his first over wielded a wicket thanks to a good catch from Louis Adey. The older of the two batsmen was removed for 40, after a strong 110 partnership. Newbury struck again with the first ball of his second over, leaving him poised for a hattrick and the team poised for a marvellous comeback. However, the hattrick ball came and went….and so did Newbury, he hobbled off the pitch mid-over with a hamstring problem. With M.Paton taking over bowling duties and Chloe Adey coming into the attack, Marldon made it over the line with handful of overs to spare. The young number 5 bat remained 72 not out. Looking at the scorebook it is clear to see where the game was won, as N.Pop managed a total of 37 wides during their time in the field.
