Newton Poppleford Cricket Club Won by 170 runs
Match report
Cox finally joins Centurions
Heavy lead skies threatened rain as NPCC hosted Geriatrics’ on Sunday. Those with smart phones and weather apps would see the band of rain that threatened to delay proceedings at the Riverside Oval stretched as far as Cardiff and had interrupted the World Cup ODI between Pakistan and India. The away team were asked to take the field in what some called a brave choice by the home Captain.
Usual opener’s Tony Cox and Isaac Thomas led a superb batting display. A 224 run opening partnership comfortably broke the record for highest partnership. The two balanced each other perfectly. Cox plays the accumulator, nudging and nurdling and running hard. Thomas the more expansive, destructive batsmen. Tony is a cricketer whose natural talent is only overcast by his dismal run of form this season. Prior to this fixture Cox averaged just 8. For a long time, members have speculated that he was overdue a meaningful score for the club. It was a swat out to the vacant midwicket boundary that brought up his century and a KP-esque fist pump to celebrate. The next over Isaac brought up his own century. A slightly more reserved celebration this time such is the repetitiveness Thomas has of scoring big runs. Both openers fell shortly after, but the bulk of the damage was done.
Returning from University, Luke Raistrick was asked to take the ball for the first over from the Pavilion End. A controlled 6 over spell yielded just 22 runs and picked up a wicket. It was first change bowler Leigh Adey who took control of the game for the home side picking up 3 for just 11. Leigh was also the architect for 2 run outs in the Geriatric’s innings. With plenty of runs on the board Kenny Clay varied the bowling. All 6 bowlers used picked up a wicket, including the Captain himself who enjoyed a rare 40 over game without the gloves. A solid bowling and fielding display meant the visitors were dismissed for 82 and the margin of victory was some 170 runs.
Our perpetual thanks to Sonia Adey and Richard Sommers for use of the Play Cricket scoring equipment, to Colin and the groundsmen and Four Elms Fruit Farm who sponsored the fixture.
