Newton St Cyres v Newton Poppleford Cricket Club NPCC on Sun 26 Apr 2009 at 14.00
Newton Poppleford Cricket Club Won By 39 runs
Match report
Newton Pop travelled to Newton St Cyres for the season opener and after losing the toss it was no suprise the vistors were asked to bat on a damp wicket under overcast skies.
Some unpredictable bounce was expected from the wicket but Newtons` openers weren`t expecting to see the ball passing eye level quite so consistantly.
When Coombs(4) was undone by a fierce straight one, the returning Morison came to the crease. After last seasons sabatical Morison was unsure of his form but by playing himself in he soon allayed his own concerns and started scoring freely. He was ably supported by Last(9)and then Stott(6), pushing the score on to 64 at the halfway stage.
When Morison was eventually bowled for a commanding 45, Captain Clay took up the baton. Stoutly supported by first Alsford and then Cardwell he found the long-on boundary with ease. Smashing 21 from one over, Clay looked to push the score beyond 170 until he chased a wide one and edged behind for a swashbuckling 43. Cardwell was running out of partners when he fell for 16 and Newton ended their innings at 144 all out.
With the sun coming out Newton St Cyres probably had the best of the conditions but found runs hard to come by with the frugal Thomas and the suprisingly economical Matt Raistrick bowling in tandem. Thomas finished with 1 for 8 and Raistrick 0 for 16 but both had heaped considerable pressure on the hosts. This was shown when a suicidal run was ended by some smart fielding by Thomas Clay off the bowling of Burton.
With Coombs causing more problems at the other end the hosts` run rate had moved along to five an over. And when Coombs stumbled to take a c&b, Stott pouching one at first slip and Clay taking a looped effort behind the stumps the hosts were left needing 70 from the last 10 overs.
Burton finished with 1 for 33 and Coombs 2 for 30 but Newton St Cyres still had dangerous opener Parfitt at the crease. He had passed his fifty, surviving two dropped catches, when he played a Cardwell delivery too early and saw it loop to Morison.
Cardwell and Last then wrapped up the tail with Cardwell finshing with the enviable figures of 4 for 11 and Last 1 for 2 to see Newton Poppleford win by 39 runs.
