Buckland Brewer v Newton Poppleford Cricket Club NPCC on Sun 24 May 2009 at 14:30
Newton Poppleford Cricket Club Won By 155 Runs
Match report
Having lost the previous weekend`s fixture to the weather it was with some dismay that Newton learnt their scheduled opponents couldn`t raise a side and called off with just a days notice. But Newton`s enterprising fixtures secretary was determined to find a game somewhere and after a smart piece of google-ing, followed up by a quick phone call, Newton found themselves making the trek to North Devon.
Captain Coombs won the toss and decided to bat first, something Newton hadn`t done this season. Openers Last and Chaplin got off to a good start until Chaplin (9) was bowled by one that stayed very low. Morison carried on the good work, aided by a slope and some wayward bowling that was to make extras top score until caught for 29.
Last (8) followed LBW bringing Cardwell and Coombs to the crease. These two dug in for a while, content to pick up those extras and had surprisingly put on a fifty partnership before Cardwell miss-judged the line and was bowled for 10. Alex Raistrick (4) pulled a lovely shot to the boundary before he did the same bringing debutant Chatwood to the middle.
Coombs decided he had hung around long enough and a customary swipe saw him bowled for 25, enabling Alsford to bat with step-son Chatwood. The youngster soon had him scampering quick ones and twos before Aslford (4) tried to turn the tables and was promptly run out by a direct hit. Burton was told to listen to the senior batsmen which he did, but soon regretted and was also run out for 2.
Chatwood was now dominating the bowling and was looking for some support, but when Goldthorpe tried to get him on strike he only succeeded in running him out when he was well set on 25.
With the overs running out Goldthorpe employed the slog-sweep to great effect finishing 18 not out and Newton`s innings ended on 189 for 9.
After a plentiful tea Newton opened with Mathew Raistrick and Burton. With neither known for their wicket-taking prowess this season the first few overs went according to form with no hint of the carnage yet to develop. Raistrick was first to strike and when he followed up with two more in one over Coombs has seen enough and hauled him off, telling Burton he only he had one more as well. Burton then produced a gem of an over. Clean bowling two in two balls he struck the pads with his third to take a superb hat-trick.
Chatwood then claimed the man-of-the-match award when his pace and precision yielded 2 for 8 and Cardwell wrapped it all up to leave Newton victors by 155 runs.
