Newton Poppleford Cricket Club Won By 5 Wickets
Match report
POPPLES SAVE BEST TIL LAST FOR 5 WICKET WIN
Newton travelled to Plymtree determined to get back to winning ways after a couple of recent defeats. With the overcast conditions complimenting the bowler friendly strip it would be a good toss to win but, as befits this credit-crunch era, neither captain had a coin to toss with! In the end Newton`s skipper Clay guessed correctly which side the cigarette lighter would fall and promptly inserted the hosts.
Plymtree made a cautious start against the fathers day pairing of Mathew and Alex Raistrick and fittingly it was Matthew who`s patience lead to the first wicket. When these two had finished their spell Plymtree were looking to accelerate and they found a few gaps until the pacey Chatwood first got one to move back off the seam and then forced the batsman to sky a catch to Last at mid-off.
With Tom Chaplin steaming in from the other end Plymtree were labouring and when his nagging line outside off stump forced an edge, Matthew Raistrick took a stunning, diving one-handed catch at second slip. These two combined to repeat the trick again in the next over although in a more regulation, not quite so stunning fashion.
Chaplin finished with 3 for 22 and Chatwood 3 for 17 on a day when all Newton`s bowlers took wickets – even brief cameos for Coombs and 20-over-specialist Manning produced success - and all this left Plymtree on 84 all out.
With just two an over needed Newton`s reply got off to the worst possible start when the in-form Goldthorpe was bowled in only the second over. Last was joined by Stott and these two ticked the score along to 32 before Stott edged behind for 13. Last was showing great character and skill to pick off the bad balls but Coombs picked the wrong one and played on for 2.
Last defied everything thrown at him and continued to score steadily but Skipper Kenny Clay just couldn`t get going, try as he might nothing seemed to come off and after a totally uncharacteristic 19 balls he shot straight back to the bowler for a duck. Son Thomas was smart enough not to say anything as he passed on his way out and after smashing one glorious shot to the boundary he soon joined him in the pavilion, bowled for 5, but wearing a contented grin.
It was left to Chaplin (13 not out) and the magnificent Last (39 not out) to see Newton over the line in the 37th over for a well timed and deserved 5 wicket win.
