Newton Poppleford Cricket Club NPCC v Tipton St John on Sun 05 Jul 2009 at 14:00
Newton Poppleford Cricket Club Lost By 30 Runs
Match report
Newton welcomed their nearest neighbours Tipton over for the eagerly anticipated home leg of this derby fixture. These matches always throw up some outstanding individual performances to compliment the great spirit that exists between these sides, and this one was no exception.
Home skipper Clay won the toss and inserted the visitors, confident the wicket should offer something to the bowlers. Unfortunately Tipton`s run-machine Tolley took a liking to the short pitched balls of Newton`s Matthew Raistrick and Tom Chaplin, allowing him to race the score along to 40 from just the first 5 overs. In between the rain-breaks Matthew Raistrick lifted the home sides spirits by removing the leg stump of Dawson (4) but Tolley continued to score heavily until the introduction of Alex Raistrick and young speedster Chatwood brought some much needed discipline to the attack.
Alex got Jesop (11) to edge behind before Chatwood`s pace forced J Williamson (4) to nick one that skied down to third-man. At 95 for 3 at drinks an ominous score was looming unless Newton could silence the outstanding Tolley or deprive him of partners and when Chatwood removed Gibbins (4) to finish his spell with 2 for 19, Newton were looking for a minor miracle.
A quick chat between Clay and his Vice Captain Coombs saw the latter offer “to have one or two” and when his first ball was clipped by Tolley for 4, a very short spell indeed was envisaged. However, Coombs gave a similar ball to Gillham (2) who clipped it straight to Cardwell and when the incoming Joe Birch slashed and edged to Stott, the field moved in more in hope than anticipation. Coombs then surprised everyone by forcing Jessop jnr to nudge straight to Chaplin and he had bagged his first ever hat-trick.
Marsh toiled away at the other end but the luck was with Coombs and when he bowled D Birch (6) and had M Channon (7) caught off the last ball, he finished with 5 for 30. Tipton`s Tolley had survived every effort to dislodge him and carried his bat for a masterful 107 from their final total of 185 for 9.
Newton`s openers needed to get off to a good start and did so until Chaplin (7) edged to Gillham. Morison joined Coombs and, keeping up with the asking rate, these two had built a strong foundation at drinks with the score at 87 for 1. Tipton swung the game back their way when the introduction of Channon and the evergreen O`Higgins firmly put the skids on. When Morison (35), Coombs (27), Stott (0) and Clay (7) all fell to these two in quick succession a big innings from somewhere was needed.
And Alex Raistrick threatened to do it and snatch an unlikely victory when he launched in to an all out assault on the Tipton attack. Ably supported by first Cardwell (5)and then Last (8) he almost succeeded, plundering 37 vigorous runs until edging behind to leave Tipton victors by 30 runs. A thoroughly entertaining and competitive match played with exemplary sportsmanship by both sides can only enhance the return fixture in September.
