Bridford v Newton Poppleford Cricket Club NPCC on Sun 19 Jul 2009 at 14:30
Newton Poppleford Cricket Club Won 8 wickets
Match report
Despite several players unavailable due to holidays and other commitments Newton Poppleford were able to field a strong side with a blend of youth and experience for the trip to Bridford. The weather on route was inclement and despite a light shower on arrival the game got underway on time.
Bridford batted first , with Ed Thomas and Matthew Raistrick opening the bowling for the visitors. Thomas bowled with typical accuracy and dismissed the top three batsmen finishing his spell of 8 overs with 3 wickets for only 12 runs .He was supported by Raistrick, who despite being a little wayward at times , helped keep the pressure on. By the end of 16 overs, Bridford 37 for 3.
The change of bowling brought Alex Raistrick and Andrew Marsh into the action. Bridford's captain was now at the crease and he struck a few lusty blows, however at the other end he lost four partners . The first a run out and then a terrific hatrick from Marsh. Raistrick (jnr) was unlucky to drop a ball that descended from the heavens but did manage to pick up a wicket in combination with a catch from James Morison. Captain , Kenny Clay had the luxury of being able to bring Tom Chaplin and Alan Cardwell into the attack as third change , another run out with terrific fielding by Chaplin and a smart catch bt Thomas Clay from Cardwell's bowling brought the innings to an end. 142 allout
Newton's reply started slowly in the face of some high standard bowling from the home side and openers Chaplin and Jim Last fell cheaply, Morison batted at 3 with Alex Raistrick promoted to 4. Together these two began to build a match winning partnership with good shot selection, sound defence and intelligent running between the wickets. Morison finished unbeaten on 61 , Raistrick unbeaten on 58 ( his first 50 for the club) and together their partnership of 136 was a new record since the club reformed. The performance particularly seem to please Captain Clay , though he did have to reprimand one player for inappropriate clothing before heading home.
