Thorverton v Newton Poppleford Cricket Club NPCC on Sun 02 Aug 2009 at 14:00
Newton Poppleford Cricket Club Won By 24 runs
Match report
The break in the weather allowed Newton to travel to Thorverton and, considering the wicket was under water less than 24 hours earlier, were grateful to their hosts for ensuring the game could go ahead.
Thorverton were happy to insert their guests and Newton`s opening pair of Last and A Raistrick soon found they had a wicket that would be difficult to bat on. The unpredictable bounce would cause problems for batsmen all day and if the bowlers could maintain an accurate line and length then runs would be at a premium.
Last (1) was first to go swiftly followed by A Raistrick(11) who, after putting a couple of wayward deliveries over square leg, offered a difficult chance back to the bowler. Stott also scored freely over square leg, but was relieved to see a couple of relatively easy chances put down before he lost partners Coombs (10) and K Clay (15), both to well taken catches from powerfully struck shots.
Things got worse for Newton when Tom Chaplin was adjudged stumped second ball with brother Greg, umpiring for the day, making the decision. Cardwell joined Stott and these two played the conditions well, looking to take Newton to a respectable score until Stott, who had survived yet another drop, edged behind for 48.
Newton committed the cardinal sin of not batting out their overs when first Burton (9) and then ducks for T Clay, T Alsford and Marsh left Cardwell 7 not out and Newton`s innings finished at 124.
Newton needed to bowl well to defend this meagre total and got off to a good start when Thorverton`s openers couldn`t score against the accuracy of both Marsh and A Raistrick. When frustration set in Marsh first induced a rash shot that saw Burton take a difficult chance low down and then saw Cardwell take an easier one to give him figures of 2 for 13. A Raistrick finally got reward for his patience taking 2 for 15 but Thorverton, with plenty of overs left, still had control of the game.
Burton struck quickly when Alsford, who had been kept busy in the field, held on to a well struck shot leaving the hosts at 40 for 5 at drinks. Burton struck twice more to finish with 3 for 22 but Thorverton were still in with a chance, needing 48 from the last 8 overs. And when Coombs and Cardwell sent down two wayward overs the home side scented victory. But it wasn`t to be as first Coombs and then Cardwell took the last two wickets to leave Newton victors by 24 runs.
