Match report
Thomas Tons Up Again
Despite the heavy showers on Saturday night, this weekends 40 over game versus The Erratics went ahead as scheduled. The wicket was green and still slightly damp. It might have been tempting for captain Kenny Clay to bowl first. He decided otherwise, sending Isaac Thomas and Antony Cox to open up. Antony continued his run of bad form with an unlucky chopped on this weekend. With the score at 7 for 1, Tom Clay joined Isaac at the crease. They repeated their dominant batting display from two weeks ago, smashing the opposition around the ground from early on. Looking very comfortable at the crease, and cruising with a high run rate, both players passed 50 before drinks with the score at 148 for 1. Isaac went passed his 100 with a simple bat raise to mark the milestone. Captain Kenny Clay would later remark he thought it was one of the best of Isaac’s hundreds. He departed eventually for 113(94) thanks to a good catch. A record had been broken, with Isaac and Tom smashing a 193 partnership, which is now the club’s highest. Tom unfortunately fell short of a hundred after snicking off for 89(77) which by Tom’s standards was a rather slow knock. It was encouraging to see him show maturity in his fine innings, earning lots of runs through good singles and twos. Matthew Raistrick would finish as the 3rd highest run scorer with 23. Richard Coombs and Chris Anning also looked good at the crease despite both being out for 7. One of the highlights for the Erratics was a fantastic one-handed catch at mid-off to remove Leigh Adey (6). It was met with applause and admiration by the Newton Pop team. Perhaps the strangest part of the innings came late on when Andrew Marsh came out to bat at number 10, rather than his usual number 11. In spite of this drastic change in proceedings, Marsh took on his new role with gusto, and finished 0*. Newton Pop posted a very strong 270 from their 40 overs.
It would be Andrew Marsh and Chris Davis to open the bowling after a lovely tea. Davis struggled with his lines throughout his spell and conceded many wides. He did pick up the first wicket with thanks to a sharp slip catch from Matt Raistrick. This wicket extended Chris’ lead as the highest wicket taker of the season. Chris finished with 1 for 49 off his 8 overs. Andrew Marsh meanwhile kept things more economical and was rewarded with a wicket with help from another great one-handed catch. The catch this time was courtesy of Antony Cox, who in recent weeks has been putting on a bit of a fielding masterclass.
First change bowler Jordan Fowler found success in his second over with a plumb LBW. In his 7 over spell, he would concede just 20 runs. Erratics batsmen C.Ferro and F.Chave enjoyed a good partnership and both managed to reach a half century. However, they were never really going to get near the target set by the home side. Leigh Adey (0-32), Antony Cox (0-25) and Chris Anning (0-19) all bowled very well considering the batsmen wanted to up the run rate. Erratics finished 62 runs short of the 271 total they needed to win.
NPCC therefore maintain their 40-Over winning record, which has now increased to 10 games. Newton Pop also haven’t lost a Sunday game at home for 12 consecutive matches. They hope to extend this when they welcome Stokeinteignhead next weekend. Thanks go to Sonya for scoring and Ian French for coming to umpire.
