TRIUMPH ON TOUR
This tropical bank holiday weekend saw NPCC travel northwards to Ilfracombe for a 30 over game.
Newton Pop would bat first, sending in resident opener Isaac Thomas and young Thomas Moore to start proceedings. Despite being practically comatose for the whole journey to the ground thanks to his antics the night before, T.Moore took the attack to the Ilfracombe bowlers with great success. He would hit a quick 30 ball 50, finding the boundary on six occasions and clearing it four times. Sadly, he was soon stumped on 58, much to the delight of the oppositions umpire, who cheered and then celebrated with the home team. Number three batsman Thomas Clay was out the very next ball, leaving the score at 94 for 2 after 10 overs. With the run rate far exceeding expectations, opener I.Thomas and new batsman Richard Coombs could take their time and build a solid partnership. They did this well by using their feet against the spinners and rotating the strike. Coombs would depart for a useful 24, bringing Antony Cox to the crease. Together, Isaac and Antony would continue to find the gaps and rotate the strike. Isaac was eventually out for 70 having hit his own wickets, departing with yet another chunk out of his derelict bat. There was just enough time for A.Cox to reach 20, before useful contributions from K.Clay (13*) and L.Adey (10*). NPCC finished on a very strong 210 off their 30 overs.
For Newton Pop the second innings could not have started better, with Phil Hunter bagging a wicket with the very first ball. His partner at the other end, Ben Stone, had struggled to find his areas the previous weekend. Thankfully for both himself and the team, he managed this game to bowl consistently good areas and earned 3 wickets as a result. The highlight of these three came thanks to a fantastic one-handed gully catch courtesy of Thomas Clay. Ilfracombe never looked like reaching the total, despite resistance from one of the opening batsmen. Chris Davis, Leigh Adey and Thomas Clay would all take one wicket each during their spells. Matthew Raistrick enjoyed some time with the ball in hand and finished with 2 for 17 off 6 overs. Ilfracombe would end up on 134, with every N.Pop bowler performing well.
Thanks go to Sonya for scoring again for us and Paul Newbury who joined us as umpire for the day.
