Newton Poppleford Cricket Club Won by 93 runs
Match report
Moore rewrites the history book.
Cricket is a game for the statisticians. The honours board at Lords is the pinnacle of the game. This season has seen records tumble and honours boards have been updated regularly. The first half of the season was dominated by opener and Sidmouth 2nd XI player, Isaac Thomas. The red-haired maestro holds the record for the highest individual score in league cricket for a Sidmouth player, a measly 210*. His young apprentice, Thomas Moore, made his 1st XI Premier debut this weekend. The two Sidmouth players opened for Newton when the Old Leightonian’s won the toss and decided to bowl.
Moore couldn’t put a foot wrong in the first 5 overs. Crunching the ball to the boundary with power and prowess. Thomas on the other hand couldn’t lay bat on ball, struggling to score early on. In fact it wasn’t until the 6th over, with the score on 44, Thomas made his first run to cheers and applause from the sideline.
The opening pair managed 80 before Isaac guided one straight to second slip rather too easily for his liking. Moore was joined by Coombs in his 299th game for NPCC. The pair batted nicely guiding the home side past the drinks break. In this time Moore had passed 50 and looked comfortable. Coombs was amassing his own attack, clipping the ball off his legs through mid-wicket for 4. Moore looked a class act as he passed 100 for the first time in his career. The pair piled 130 against a tiring attack before Richard succumbed for 57.
The last 10 overs of the home batting innings are something of a blur. The ball regularly disappeared to all parts of the ground with increasing power. The destructive batting of Moore knew no bounds. Somewhere in all of the chaos Moore firstly passed 166*, the previous highest individual score of any 1st XI player and eventually reached a spectacular landmark, 200*. Newton Poppleford left the field having posted 367/3. Some return after being put in to bat.
Old Leightonian’s came out to bat and showed the home side just how good a pitch it was to bat on. Newton’s openers sent down 13 overs for 88 runs. Both returned for second spells and Ben Fisher picked up his two wickets in the later stages of the game. Chris Davis extended his lead at the top of the wickets table when
Luke Raistrick hung on to a catch at mid wicket. The mystery spinner Raistrick proved less of a mystery to the Old Leightonian batsmen who despatched him for 58 in his 6 overs.
The visitors had made their way to 200/1 and the chase seemed to be well on. The last person you would expect to be called to bowl would be a player who’s only taken 1 wicket this season, but skipper Clay threw the ball to George House regardless. In just 7 overs the game was turned in the home side’s favour. 4 wickets for House wobbled the touring team. Newton Poppleford won by a comfortable 93 runs and Old Leightonian’s made more than just a game of it.
4 hundreds this season including a staggering 200. There will be plenty to talk about at the awards evening!
