Newton Poppleford Cricket Club Won By 102 Runs

Match report Before you read the view from Tipton, a few milestones were reached during this match......

This was the club`s 250th win.
This was the 14th consecutive victory over our neighbours.
On his 300th appearance for Newton Poppleford, Richard Coombs took his 100th catch.
Alex Raistrick became the quickest player so far to reach 200 wickets.

The Tipton elders had a great success with their rain dance last week, which meant another stuffing by Newton Poppleford was avoided with the help of a drizzly Sunday.
However, other forces were at work this week as both teams had opposition crying off. Tipton were due to play Cavendish Cavaliers, a side we have not played before, but sadly they were unable muster enough troops. It seems that Newton Poppleford were intending to play the Rockbeare Roundheads*, but having just killed off a few Cavaliers (might explain the above) they were out celebrating. So fate intervened allowing the Raistrick and Adey families with a few helpers to invade Tipton St John and spent the afternoon pillaging runs.
Tipton were led by David O’Higgins who may well have been a Cavalier in his youth. Kenny Clay had no difficulty in winning the toss and putting his troops into bat first. Brothers in arms were Alex and Luke Raistrick, facing David Birch and Alex Tubbs. The brothers made a bright start with Alex hitting the final ball of Birch’s first over for a six, and Luke smashed his first ball from Tubbs for a boundary.
However, in his 2nd over Birch contained Alex for 5 dot balls after which the batsman attempted to hit the 6th over the top, but only skied it to Alex Tubbs at mid off.
This only brought in Tom Moore who 2 weeks earlier had scored 200 not out! He played himself in – for 2 balls - before unleashing an assault on the Tipton bowlers. He smashed 50 off 24 balls, though did have a life when dropped by keeper Chris Tubbs on 29.
One of his boundaries did not actually cross the boundary line! The ball was scuttling towards the score hut and was only a foot from crossing the line when a young brown spaniel out having his walkies with owners and two other doggie friends saw it coming. He (or she) dived over the boundary and stopped it just as two fielders reached the scene of the crime. The ball was returned to the wicket keeper, but after a moment of deliberation, a four was signalled. Now, at the outset I must say that this was the correct decision. I have trawled the Laws of the game to back this up and offer law 19.4.1:
19.4.1 The ball in play is grounded beyond the boundary if it touches
- the boundary or any part of an object used to mark the boundary;
- the ground beyond the boundary;
- any object that is grounded beyond the boundary.
I put forward that the object in question, the excitable spaniel was grounded beyond the boundary by the lead and his/her owner so a boundary was scored. What if the errant dog was off the lead, and therefore not so grounded? Where is Blackers when you need him.
The 50 was posted in the 8th over and shortly after, captain O’Higgins opted for a change, bringing himself on to replace Alex Tubbs. Tom Moore welcomed him with a six as Higgy went for 12 in his first over. We really thought the captain’s marbles had gone missing when Dave Jessop replaced Birch. Now, poor Jessy in his last bowling stint went for 35 in 2 overs at Woodbury so how would he fare against the might of NP? Just one boundary from Moore as nine were conceded, but he would not have to bowl at him again as Higgy bamboozled Moore with one of his aerials, which the batsman top edged into the awaiting, gloves of Chris Tubbs. Moore scored 61 off just 31 balls.
This unlikely bowling paring induced a Newton Poppleford equivalent of a Tipton Tumble, perhaps could be called a ‘Popples Topple? as they lost 5 wickets for 22 runs.
A wicket maiden by Jessop included the end of Luke Raistick who had scored a patient 17 off 32 balls. This was a rather controversial dismissal, as from the distant vantage point of the score hut, it looked like Jessop had used a Stuka dive bomber to deliver the ball which appeared close to his head as it made a bee line for the stumps. The umpires (both from NP am relieved to say) did not consider this a no-ball and poor Luke left the field. My understanding is that if a ball passes the batsman over waist height, a no-ball should be called, although yet more wasted minutes trawling the Laws could not support this. Your comments would be interesting, but futile as far as Luke is concerned.
The run rate slowed with Richard Coombs and Kenny Clay at the crease as probably none of them wished to be an O’Higgins victim. After 15 dot balls, Clay burst into life, but only to hit a ball off O’Higgins into the safe hands of Phil Tolley. Matthew Raistrick who had become Higgy’s 900th Tipton wicket a few weeks ago, had some retribution by hitting him for a boundary first ball, but 2nd ball became O’Higgins victim number 908 aided by another catch from keeper Tubbs.
At the mid innings mark Newton Poppleford were 106-5, but this soon became 110-7 as Phil Tolley took a catch off Jessop to remove the first of the Adey family for 4. Jessop had bowled admirably, but his final over was a bit wayward with 3 wides so was retired from the attack with fine figures of 2-19 off six overs.
Now, as for Higgy, after his first over that has cost 12, he did rather well in his next 5 taking 3-11. He should have quitted whilst he was ahead, but you know Higgy, you won’t get the ball out of his hand until he has bowled all 8. Louis Adey had replaced father Lee (I think … and hope!) and exploded onto the game. 20 were taken from Higgy’s 7th over including 3x4’s and a 6 and 15 from his last which was rather a pity as he finished up with figures of 3-58.
By now, Kevin McMeeking had arrived. He had been stuffing himself at a family lunch leaving his fielding to Amelia Tolley. It wasn’t long before he had to work off his Yorkshire Pud as he was brought on to replace O’Higgins. Louis Adey continued his onslaught, at one time scoring off 11 consecutive balls. Meanwhile, at the other end, Richards Coombs was still there, nudging singles to rotate the strike.
Louis’s 50 came off just 21 balls. The partnership had reached 58 (43 to Adey) when the returning Alex Tubbs caught & bowled Coombes for 19. This brought in Chloe Adey to join big brother (or dad if I have got it wrong!) She defended well for 15 balls before getting a slight nick enabling Chris Tubbs to take his 3rd catch.(Who needs Dickie now!) McMeeking the successful bowler. Alex Tubbs had finished his spell with 2 maidens and figures of 1-45 and was replaced by David Birch. Birch trapped Chris Davis LBW 2nd ball after he had struck a boundary with his first. This brought in last man Andrew Marsh but it was Louis Adey took a shine to Birch’s bowling striking 5 boundaries as he raced to 90. Thought of a ton were ended by David Thayre who bowled him with his 3rd ball. His 90, came from just 40 balls.
Newton Poppleford’s innings ended on 225, a considerable target for Tipton to digest along with Michelle Tolley’s fine tea. With indigestion already was David Birch with his 2nd worst ever bowling figures of 2-64.
Tipton opened with Phil Tolley and David Jessop. They faced the old campaigner Andrew Marsh and Chris Davis. The innings proceeded well, apart from a chance offered by Jessop on 9. Jessop looked in fine fettle with some nice shots, whilst Tolley was just Tolley, accumulating runs. The score reached 48 when Jessop picked out Richard Coombs off the bowling of Marsh. Both bowlers were rested at this stage and replaced by the Raistrick brothers. Luke struck with his 2nd ball, inducing an edge from Tolley and was caught behind by Kenny Clay. The ‘Tipton Tumble’ was in progress as 4 wickets fell for 11 runs. Both David Thayre and Alex Tubbs fell to Alex Raistrick for 6 and 1 respectively. Thayre was bowled and Tubbs caught by Luke Raistrick. Chris Tubbs became Alex’s 3rd victim when he was bowled for 5.
Roger Hunt had replaced Thayre and he batted really well over the next 45 minutes as wickets fell around him. Jem Gillham was providing support until he was nabbed by the Raistrick’s, this time caught Alex, bowled Luke.
Al Matthews was going quite well, but became stranded by the introduction of Chloe Adey. His bat swishing had taken place long before the ball had arrived, and he was confused by the 8 wides she had delivered. This was all a cunning plan by Chloe, as she sneaked in a straight one and bowled him for 15.
Defeat was by now a certainty, and it was another Adey who applied the coup de grâce, Lee.
Roger Hunt’s fine innings was ended when he was caught by Moore for 26, his highest score for Tipton, scored off 39 balls. David Birch went 4th ball which is 2 more faced than Higgy who was caught by Alex Raistrick for a duck. Lee Adey had mopped up the tail with 3-10 whilst Alex Raistrick eclipsed him with 3-8.
So, yet another defeat by Newton Poppleford, this time by 102 runs.
