Match report A local derby to remember
The 2019 cricketing season got underway against local rivals Tipton St John in what is always a highly anticipated fixture. The captains strolled to the middle for the toss which was won by K. Clay of Newton Poppleford. Although the pitch was damp due to the recent weather, Clay opted to bat, having faith in his usually high performing top order.
However, C. O’Higgins, grandson of Tipton legend D. O’Higgins, took advantage of a tricky pitch by bowling with incredible accuracy, meaning the batting side couldn’t get a hold of the game, his spell of 6 overs went for just 6 runs and reaped 5 top-order wickets. Newton Poppleford were in a precarious position and knew the tail would need to wag. Leigh Adey countered with a number of boundaries however his departure amongst others left the side 74-9 with 16 overs left of the innings. L. Raistrick greeted C. Davis at the crease knowing a partnership was needed. Tipton’s bowlers were performing well however watchful batting from the no. 10 and 11, as well as a smattering of boundaries, managed to push the total up to 132 by the time C. Davis was caught by the star man C. O’Higgins, a partnership of 58. C. Davis finished as the top scorer with 32, with L. Raistrick adding 26*.
The same pair would open the bowling aiming to take some early wickets to put Newton Poppleford in charge. L. Raistrick picked up 2 while C. Davis was left wicketless. L. Adey had taken another and debutant M. Tett had also, however, Tipton had started strongly and at drinks, N. Pop still needed 6 more wickets with just 50 runs to play with. L. Adey Jnr then produced an incredible spell of bowling, hitting dangerous areas consistently. The youngster picked up another 4 wickets to reward him with his first 5fer for the club, with father Leigh taking the other 2 scalps to guide NPCC to a tightly-fought 20 run win. The 16th consecutive derby victory meant NPCC captain Kenny Clay retained the cup and Tipton were left wondering why they couldn’t take advantage of such a promising position.
Many thanks to those who provided teas, as well as to Sonia and the Tipton scorer and to Potburys Funeral Services who sponsored the match ball for the game.
